Karen on a Personal Level
As a native Nevadan, Las Vegas has always been my permanent home. From the time I was in elementary school, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. After all, my 1st grade teacher was sub-human…just like all teachers. She never raised her hand to ask the class for permission to use the restroom. From this point on, I knew being “one of them” was for me.
I went to school at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff and UNLV in Las Vegas, majoring in physical education, health, and reading and continued my education earning a Masters Degree in Education. With additional coursework beyond my Masters Degree, I received an administrative endorsement. I was recognized on the national Teacher of the Year level which led to multiple opportunities as a speaker at national, regional and state conferences. Additionally, I served as a consultant for four years with Sportime International, the world’s leading physical education and sporting good company.
During my early years as a mom and early in my teaching career, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Experiencing numbness from the waist down and great fatigue, I decided that I should find another line of related work to transfer into should the outdoor elements become too much for my health. In doing so, I began taking additional educational leadership courses. After sixteen years as a classroom teacher, I entered the world of educational administration. As an administrator I was selected three times, in different capacities, to open new schools in the Clark County School District, the fifth largest school district in the nation. I was involved in the development of the new schools from the time of ground breaking to the opening of the school house doors. In 2001, I was the principal of the largest middle school in the State of Nevada with over 2,235 students. I completed my career as the principal of a unique dual-credit, high school/college program. In 2005, I retired from education after 30 years, with over 12 years as a building administrator.
Since retiring, I worked for a private company as their senior vice president in the development of a new division for their business. That project now complete, I work full-time in my Professional Coaching and Speaking practice where I lead individuals through their adversities – whether the adversities are in their professional or personal life…regardless of their cause. We develop their skills to effectively deal with their daily Communications, Rapport, Attitudes & Perspectives in all situations.
In reflecting on my life experiences, I remember what my father told me as I laid in the hospital bed waiting to go for a spinal fluid test. He said, “Everyone has something…and this is your cross to bear!” Keeping that in mind, I’ve always maintained a positive ‘can-do’ attitude…knowing that God never gives us more than we can handle.
